Access Control Bollard

Burri 2003

Burri are market leaders in street furniture and have been supplying equipment in Zurich since 1907. Billings Jackson first worked with Burri on an edge-illuminated signage system range before being invited to work on the company’s highest volume product: access bollards.

Billings Jackson saw that while the existing designs were of a very high quality there were a number of areas where improvements could be made both in production and in providing a more flexible solution.

The bollard had to be designed to fit in with Burri’s standard range so that the rotational engagement of the bollard to the ground, where it sits flush to the floor surface, fits into the existing installed ground fixings.

Billings Jackson proposed that the base and lock housing should be able to take a series of different diameter stainless steel tubes to offer each city or location more choice. The base was developed as a casting to reduce factory time and guarantee the quality of finish. In addition the lock housing, formally fabricated, was designed as a lost wax casting, again improving both efficiency and quality.

The bollards can be knocked over by emergency vehicles requiring swift access. Sacrificial bolts that secure the bollard to the base plate are designed to withstand a specified load. If the bollard receives an impact, the bolts break cleanly, leaving the bollard intact and avoiding damage to the pavement and foundation.

The bollards can be seen throughout Zurich, quietly protecting paved areas and pedestrian streets.
