Door Hardware

FSB 2008

The Billings Jackson Design Door Hardware range for FSB was the result of a commission from EYP Architects.

EYP had employed Billings Jackson as consultant to the refurbishment of an architecturally significant intergovernmental building in New York, advising on the integration of technology into the historic fabric as well as designing key interior details.

The original ironmongery was not compliant with modern regulations. The challenge was to come up with a design of similar quality and integrity for the New York project that met current standards and that could form the basis of a new range for FSB.

The solution is a family of objects developed around the FSB “four rules of good grip” - aesthetic principles drawn from the work of Johannes Potente who was head of design at FSB in the 1950s. These describe the elements of an ideal lever handle: a guide for the thumb, a hollow for the forefinger, ball support for the palm and volume to fill the grasp.

The comprehensive range also includes window handles, cabinet knobs, thumb turns and doorstops, in line with the FSB philosophy of “design management” where the same product range can be applied throughout a project.
