System M Switch

The range conforms to the standard 55mmx55mm measurements expected by electricians and so the challenge was to differentiate it from existing options. Another brief requirement was to create a unit that could accommodate multiple uses, including single and two-gang switches, temperature controls, data and electrical sockets and infrared receivers. As well as meeting this need, the design allows for later alteration via a simple change of insert and frame, giving both the user and the installer greater choice.

The system comprises 3 models: the M-Alpha, the M-Arc and the M-Plan. The M-Arc and M-Plan models are available in polar white, grey-black and aluminium. As the insert is autonomous and also available in these colours, the design can be reconfigured to suit the changing tastes of the client.

Ordinarily, the back box of a standard switch defines a minimum height off the wall of 10mm for all switches and there is no way of achieving a slimmer switch but Billings Jackson was determined to make the System M as flush as possible. Initially this was achieved by adding a flange to surround the switch and Merten was so inspired by the potential of a flush switch that they invited Billings Jackson to create M-Plan II, requiring a recessed back box.

M-Plan II sits just 3mm off the surface of the wall. It is an extraordinarily simple solution and, considering the conservative nature of the building industry and in particular the electrical installer market, it was a bold move on Merten’s part to launch this mould-breaking product.
