In 2002, Grimshaw commissioned Billings Jackson to develop a new line of street furniture for Cemusa - Line 2 - to give specifying councils a greater choice.
An important feature of the original design is the ability to vary individual components to allow each location to emphasise their regional identity. In addition, the system is designed to last several decades with each part being made from self-finished stainless steel or aluminium. This allows easy replacement and reconfiguration over its life on the street.
The challenge was to build on the great success of Line 1, which has been installed in seven cities worldwide. The most significant development is the integration of an advertising panel and an information zone. The two ‘Information Blades’ provide a clean, manageable format for both council and advertising firm, offering public information and a source of revenue.
The solution was further developed to anticipate future needs, in particular to developments in technology. For example, wiring routes, fixing zones and locations were all considered and ready for use. These have already proved their value, in that internet access and solar powered public lighting solutions have been integrated since the system was first installed in Seville.
