NYC Flood Mitigation

The New York City subway system is vulnerable to flooding at various locations due to street flooding and sidewalk runoff. Some of the common causes for the street flooding are topography, inadequate or blocked drainage, and overwhelmed city sewer systems during heavy storms.

NYCT selected the HNTB/Systra Grimshaw Billings Jackson Design team to develop subway flood mitigation measures and complete preliminary engineering and final design. The design solution was to raise the perimeter of the grates and to minimise the impact of this intervention by providing seating and bike racks on top.
